stargater: (sheppard pout)

So I just finished watching Stargate Atlantis Sunday, the episode titled Sunday that is, not that it's Sunday though it's rather appropriate seeing that it is. Yeah that was pretty lame, forget I wrote that.

Anyway, while watching the episode progress I found myself reveling in the show in general and the characters. I have been enjoying SGA since it's beginning, though my interest in it really piqued sometime early during the second season. I had truly been enjoying it and had at once been comforted by the thought of it remaining after SG-1 was off the air. And with the death of Carson, it made me think of the ways the show is/will be changing.

I find myself annoyed with everything that will come into play at the end of this season and into next season. I like Atlantis for what it is... Atlantis. It's not SG-1, it wasn't meant to be SG-1 and it annoys me that it appears they are trying to mold it more into something like SG-1. Not that I'm saying anything negative about SG-1 of course, it is and will always be one of my very favorite and beloved shows, but I liked the fact that Atlantis was its own and could stand on it's own two feet.

I hate that Carson had to be killed and that Torri's character is being reduced. I think most of the reason for my discontent it that is because we don't know the reasons why. If they have personal reasons for taking time off or leaving the show that's fine, but it's just we don't know why it's happening, it just is. And as sad as it was to see Carson's fate, I am still greatly annoyed by reduction of Dr. Weir and the addition of Carter from SG-1. Sam Carter is one of my all time favorite characters (and I understand the whole deal with contracts and such) but it just doesn't seem right to me. (On and off note, I was also annoyed with introduction of Mitchell in SG-1 and even though they said that he and Carter jointly lead SG-1, it really doesn't appear that way and that wasn't right either.) When you take a character of such stature from one show and stick them in another show, it causes a big distraction. It's not like they could just put her over there in charge of her own little team or something, that would be seen as a demotion of sorts, but I don't think replacing their key leader was the right choice. It would be like replacing Captain Sisko with Captain Picard in the beginning of the 4th season of DS9. Everyone loves Picard, but it wouldn't be right, it's not his place there.

Anyway, I really don't foresee Atlantis lasting past this next season. Especially not with all these upcoming changes. I am saddened by this because Atlantis is a good show and there so much more that can be done with it.

Back to the topic of Sunday, this was really a great episode, excellently scripted and well done. I liked the character development we saw and how they showed the events of the hours leading up the explosion in segments. While I am saddened by Carson's death, at least it was a death worthy of who he was and wasn't some senseless accident or him being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Though, I wasn't sure what to make of that bit at the end with him and Rodney. Was Rodney just imagining him, or did Carson ascend or something like Daniel did? And what's with Stargate killing off it's doctors, first Dr. Fraiser and now Dr. Beckett? pfft. Of course the episode would have been much better if he hadn't died, but it was still a good episode.

End rambling.
