DW: The Silence in the Library

I'll certainly give Steven Moffat one thing, he can write a hell of a story. He had/has to be an XF fan because all of his episodes have a creepy x-file-ish nature to them. This one did not disappoint in that area either. And big old libraries with their dusty books and slippery shadows are creepy! But also very cool, I love the smell of old books. The idea of the shadows, Vashda Nerada (sp?) as their called was brilliant, I love the idea. And it reminded me of that one time I was dog sitting Lincoln and was outside with him and saw extra shadows around me on the ground. I believe I posted about it even. mmhmm extra shadows. Anyway, it also kind of reminded me the XF episode Soft Light which I never thought was that great an episode but it did make me think of it.

So, the little girl is obviously connected to the library. I've bounced around a few ideas that she's someone from the expedition or maybe even the library itself, what better place to store all that information than in a human brain right? I don't know about her just yet but the doctor that came to see her is also tied to it, perhaps as her protector or something.

I was kind of disappointed at the lack of Donna involvement in this episode and I'm even more worried for her now after her conversation with River Song about where she is in the future. Her becoming one of those statue node thingys was kind of creepy. Poor Donna. I have a feeling that the people who were in the library and 'saved' are all the nodes scattered about. And of course the Doctor will get her out. He has to.

Alright, River Song. I'm not sure of her just yet. Yes, I read the tabloid spoilers last week about her being a possible future wife of the Doctor and yes I hate the idea of that. At least with her, some woman who we've only just met. The problem I have with her is that she is a likable character and that makes me suspicious. I can't shake the idea that she's bad or is going to do something bad.

The fact that she's such a mystery and alluded to a future with the Doctor and has the book but won't tell him what's in it disturbs me just some. And that she said he gave her his Sonic Screwdriver. Also, her talking about his eyes and how young he looks then makes me think that maybe she knows him in a future regeneration.

I'm also convinced her name is an anagram or something (I'm all about the anagrams after watching the finale of Lost which I still need to post about) and it's too odd a name to not mean something. I haven't spent that much time thinking about the name just yet but I did manage to find 'Rose' in it and I know there are folks who think she might be a future/regenerated Rose but I don't think that. It wouldn't really make much sense especially after she said to Donna that the Doctor doesn't know her yet. I think she's a random character who will probably die (remember the Ood saying his 'song' must end in PotO? Coincidence perhaps?) though I suppose she might not so they could be laying some groundwork/characterization for next season. I doubt that too simply because she was played by Alex Kingston (I couldn't help but keep expecting to see her in ER scrubs) and I've heard that she was only guest starring for this two-parter. And I'm perfectly alright with her going away/dying as awful as that sounds. I just don't want any of that umm confusion for the episodes preceding the finale.

Reoccurring things: The 'song' reference again, which really if you think about it goes all the way back to series 1. I can't really remember any other's that jumped out at me.

Random things: Loved Donna kicking in the door. And how she exclaimed about the Sonic Screwdriver "it doesn't work on wood!". The 'proper Dave' and 'other Dave' was amusing. Also, all the mentions of 'spoilers' I think definitely a reference to upcoming events as it seems the internet is abuzz with spoilers and speculation for it. And I loved the TARDIS book, I want a TARDIS book! I wonder how long it'll be before some clever person makes one and puts it online ;D

So, next week Forest of the Dead and the conclusion. I await it.

This story had one of my favorite teasers & cliffhangers. :)

I'm at least thinking the girl's father is some how bad because why did the psychiatrist or whatever talk to her secretly about her needing to help The Doctor, idk. Perhaps she is the library, the father is a virus or Vashda Nerada trying to keep her immobolized, and the psychiatrist is, idk, a piece of good programming or a saved or something, but that wouldn't make sense for the father to allow him near the girl. who knows. :P

My feeling is that this is possibly a setup for when Moffat takes over, and perhaps he'll begin their actual story in Series 5 or something. I don't really know what to think of her though. Even if she does die in this two-parter, they still will meet later if this really is a setup. I honestly didn't realize the book looked like the TARDIS until I saw icons today. xP

Can't wait for the conclusion!!!

p.s. the "ghosting" was sad.

I wondered briefly as well about the father though didn't really give much thought to it since he wasn't really a huge part it seemed. Though if he were bad and the psychologist was good and she was the computer, it'd probably make sense. Maybe they (except maybe the psychologist) don't know what they are just yet.

I just can't really see Alex Kingston as a regular (or semi-regular) on the show for some reason, I could be totally wrong but it just strikes me as kind of odd that. And I still can't help but dislike the idea of her being his future wife, I don't want that so I'd kind of prefer she do whatever she's supposed to do and go away :P How horrible is that lol. Anyway, if she dies, how could they meet up again in the future? Wouldn't that be some sort of paradox? *shrugs* I loved that book, hehe a little TARDIS book. :D

I'm quite eager for the conclusion myself. And yeah, the ghosting was pretty sad. And creepy.

Perhaps the psychologist is the library/main computer/something of that sort & the girl the security system, and yeah, he's the only one aware of the situation or something.

Yeah I don't like the idea, at least not yet, of them actually being together. I don't see why it'd be a paradox, like, Martha met The Doctor before actually meeting The Doctor. The Sparrow girl met The Doctor before he was trapped in the past, but after she'd gone through the events with the angels. They could very well meet in The Doctor's future, but in River Song's past. :)

Well alright, I may have confused myself there for a second thinking about time lines and such. What I mean though is that she's from the 51st century and knows the Doctor in the future. But if she dies now, it's only relative to her time line not his up until the point they met here. He won't know all those other things that happened because they'll never happen to him because she would have died before it all would have happened for him. And he can't go back and cross lines like that preventing her death or anything because it'd cause some sort of problem (maybe not paradox) but something, I thought I remember a conversation about that very thing and how he couldn't do it.

I have no idea if that made any sense but it seems to work for me in my head :P

I still think he can run into her because the events have happened to her, but just not to him yet; it is his future, that is why she won't let him look at the book, his future is her past. I think he can still run into her, how he originally did, as long as nothing spoils the events that caused him to me her in his future but her past. idk, I very well think he could still run into her in his future with him already seeing her die in his past but her dying in her future. His future has already played out for her, just not for him yet, or it wouldn't be the future. Time travel is so fucking confusing, but I get what I'm saying. xP hehehe

ahh alrighty, I think I get what you're saying. And his future (her past) is already laid out for her but they may not meet again in his future, as time is always in flux right, he may avoid future contact with her (knowing the outcome ie: her death or whatnot) but that only changes events for his timeline not hers.

Time travel is definitely confusing and I'm not so sure I get what I'm saying lol :P But it's fun ni a mind 'spody sort of way to think about. hehe
